What's it about:
The date October 6 1998. A young gay man from Laramie Wyoming is found tied and savagely beaten on the outskirts of the town, He was left there to die, The actions on this day shocked the town and the nation, This young mans name was Matthew Shepherd. six days later Matthew died in hospital with his family at his side. Because of this event Laramie became branded with the name "Hate Crime Capital of America"
This film originally a Play by the New York Tectonic Theater Project, it follows events from when Matthew was found the arrest of Russell Henderson and Aaron McKinney the announcement that Matthew Died and then onto the Trials of Henderson and Mckinney, the film is shot as a documentary with members of the Tectonic Theater interviewed over 200 member of the laramie community, Then using eight actors they portray the views and recollections of the events
A very powerful film, this film touches raw nerves in the Laramie community, as well as bringing to light hate crimes, the issues and attitudes around homosexuality and HIV, with a well known cast that were rumored to have requested to be cast for this movie. This film shows the events surrounding one of the most vicious and brutal crimes in our recent history.
